Reports to: Quarry Manager

Job Type: Full Time Basis (may be required to work from different company sites by agreement with line manager.)

Summary:
The Quarry Operative is responsible for assisting in the extraction and processing of aggregate materials in a quarry environment. Your role will contribute to the efficient and safe operation of the quarry, ensuring that production targets are met while adhering to all health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Operate Heavy Machinery:

  • Operate various heavy machinery such as excavators, loaders, bulldozers, and crushers to extract, process, and transport aggregate materials as authorised.

2. Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance:

  • Compliance with all HSE legislation, including the Quarries Regulations 1999, ISO 45001 (Health & Safety). 14001 (Environmental) and 9001 (Quality) and industry best practices.
  • Follow all safety protocols, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and participate in safety meetings to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Comply with all environmental regulations and best practices for quarry operations, including dust control and erosion prevention.

3. Material Handling:

  • Load and transport aggregate materials using equipment, ensuring proper stockpiling and segregation as required.

4. Quality Control:

  • Monitor the quality of the extracted materials and perform basic testing organoleptic testing to ensure they meet specified standards.

5. Equipment and Maintenance:

  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections on equipment and machinery to ensure proper functioning and report any defects or issues to supervisor.

6. Teamwork:

  • Collaborate with other quarry operatives and team members to achieve production targets and resolve operational issues.

7. Record Keeping and Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate records of production activities, equipment usage, and maintenance activities.

8. Emergency Response:

  • Be prepared to respond to emergency situations and follow established emergency preparedness and response procedures.

Company Compliance:

  • Continual Improvement – Assist with department and or company projects as instructed by the line

Essential Criteria:

  • Must have a full UK driving license as travel between sites or suppliers may be required.
  • Have a good knowledge and understanding of processing environment and the need to maintain equipment to the highest standards.

Education and Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience operating heavy plant and machinery.
  • Previous experience in quarrying operations is a plus but not essential.
  • CPCS or NPORS Competent operator Card for some or all the following:
    Loading Shovel, 360 Excavator. Articulated Dump Truck, Forklift

Experience:

  • Able to demonstrate minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Heavy equipment operation experience and relevant certifications e.g., NPORS, CPCS is a plus but not essential.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations in quarry operations preferred but not essential.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment maintenance.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Training and CPD

  • Everyone must undertake training that has been identified for their roll by the company.
  • You will be required to familiarise yourself with colleague roles to provide complimentary cover as instructed by your line manager.
  • You will be required to perform any reasonable request by your line manager.

Working Conditions:

The Quarry Operative typically works on company sites, exposure to outdoor and industrial environments and travel is required. The candidate must be prepared to work in varying weather conditions and will be required to always wear personal protective equipment.

They will also be required to work nights, weekends, or irregular hours to meet the customer demands which will be on an ad hoc basis as required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical fitness to walk, climb and navigate uneven terrain.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and work in physically demanding conditions.
  • Stamina and endurance for long shifts.
  • Comfort working outdoors in various weather conditions.

Salary and Benefits:
• On Target Earnings: £40,000 – £50,000 per annum.
